Merry Christmas to all

In previous years, there was a push by the more politically correct among us to do away with the term Merry Christmas. Happy Holidays or Season’s Greetings, we were told, are more inclusive to non-Christians.
Whether its “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays,” people generally take expressions of good will at face value.

In previous years, there was a push by the more politically correct among us to do away with the term Merry Christmas. Happy Holidays or Season’s Greetings, we were told, are more inclusive to non-Christians.

We are pleased to report those days are over.

The vast majority of our local schools still have Christmas concerts and Christmas events. Local shop keepers here don’t spend minutes on end trying to decide what sort of greeting will be accepted by each individual customer. They simply say whatever greeting comes to mind first, be it Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays or Season’s Greetings.

Oh, sure, there are still a few mega stores out there who have orders from their pencil-pushers-on-high to avoid the C-word. But, generally speaking, society seems to have moved past this entire nonsense.

It’s a good thing, too. The Christmas season can be stressful for today’s busy family. Between paying bills and buying presents and hosting parties and sending letters to Santa and sending out cards and... let’s just say nerves tend to get a little frayed. The last thing we need is to be afraid of is offending someone when we’re trying to give them a warm, Christmas greeting.

Yes, the holiday season is about giving. But in the last few years, society seems to have learned a little something about receiving as well. It’s as if we all realized that when someone wishes you a Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, they are simply expressing good will, not trying to start a debate. We have broken free from the politically correct wet blankets who have to make an issue out of everything.

Somehow, that makes the entire season just a little more Christmassy.
