Make your vote count

If you haven’t been able to tell by the signs along our roadways, which seem to be multiplying by the day, it is election time in Alberta.

While candidates are putting the final touches on their platforms, some of us are reading the local newspapers and getting to know those individuals who have stepped up and hope to serve on council for the next three years.

All 24 candidates will be taking to the stage of Bert Church Theatre on Oct. 5 to answer your questions regarding their position on the current issues here in Airdrie. This will be the best opportunity for anyone to come out and ask a candidate a question.

From the overstuffed schools in the city and county to the tax increases the votership could be seeing in the next couple of years, Airdronians should have many questions this coming election.

The all-candidates forum is also a good indication of how engaged the public will be in the forthcoming election.

In 2007, only 12 per cent of eligible voters turned out to elect our current council, a dismal number that at the time represented about 3,800 people.

Whether you are a business owner concerned about the future of small business in Airdrie or a teenager who just left high school, there is no excuse not to come out and ask that question or voice the concern that has been on your mind, so you can make an informed decision come Oct. 18.

We live in a democracy, let’s take advantage of it.
