Local government more transparent

We are pleased to see local governments seeking input from the residents they represent.

It appears several area councillors have taken it upon themselves to follow through with campaign promises by asking constituents what issues are important to them.

The Town of Irricana is hosting a community meeting to garner input on recreational needs in the area. It will also be presenting findings from a recent needs assessment survey in hopes of hearing from more residents.

Rocky View County Springbank Councillor Kim Magnuson is conducting a similar survey within her constituency.

After hosting an open house before Christmas, she decided further work should be done to find out what the residents in her area want.

The result? A quiet, seemingly contented division, which was previously dubbed irate with a bid for separation from the County in mid-2010.

Crossfield’s recently-elected council is also attempting to breathe new life into its town by hosting community meetings. The first such meeting was held in late December and drew a crowd of about 100 residents.

Having meaningful public input is imperative to keeping local politicians in the know. It gives residents a chance to speak up about the issues they are concerned with and may help avoid all sorts of fiascos.

We only hope this feedback will be considered when it comes time to make decisions.

We’re allowed to be optimistic - it’s a new year.
