Disrespect

We were surprised when councillors attempted to skip a report from administration Jan. 22. Administration is tasked with preparing documents for council and reviewing those reports at the council meeting – often adding further detail in that presentation. For councillors to suggest the report can be skipped to save time is out of touch at best and overtly disrespectful at worst. While council likely reviewed the report prior to the meeting, members of the public who made the effort to be at that meeting likely did not. Council should present itself and the County as an open and transparent government, which includes ensuring its residents have the opportunity to be informed. Yes, the document would have been included in the meeting agenda, but would residents actually take the time to hunt it down? Then there is the disrespect shown to presenter Amy Zaluski, who likely spent a significant amount of time preparing the report that was requested by council in the first place. Does her effort mean nothing? Would that behaviour make you feel valued? We think not. Ultimately, Zaluski was allowed to present the report, but we question if council was really listening. Some councillors seemed unwilling to listen to reason and instead pursued amendments they felt were needed before undertaking public engagement. Administration is trained to be the expert in the room and must be allowed to do its job.
