Supporting Businesses

Airdrie Our View_text

It's no secret that 2020 has been challenging for businesses.

During the last three months, our reporters have spoken to several business owners who have been directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many businesses have experienced lengthy closures, extensive layoffs and lost sales and revenue. Sadly, others have had to close their doors permanently.

While large, national chains may have the resources to help them weather the storm, small home-grown businesses are at particular risk of being shuttered. The loss of these businesses would be detrimental to our community.

As Alberta has gradually reopened, some businesses like restaurants and hair salons have been able to resume operations, albeit with modified procedures. With Stage 2 of the province's relaunch strategy on the horizon, more businesses, including gyms and theatres, will be allowed to open their doors.

To ensure Airdrie businesses survive, it is imperative the community supports them. The best way to do this, of course, is with your dollar. Ordering a meal from local restaurants or choosing a local store or market over a larger chain is essentially an investment in that business' future.

Some in the community may not be in a financial position to spend money at local businesses. Owners have told us that another important way to help them is using social media to spotlight the places you love to patronize. Sharing a positive review about your favourite businesses on Facebook or Instagram can help raise their profile in the community and draw new customers.

Another way to support businesses is nominating them for the Airdrie Business Awards (see story page 11). This is a way the community can recognize the places that, in the words of Airdrie Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Marilyne Aalhus, play a vital role in making Airdrie a "vibrant, healthy, prosperous community."

It's devastating when a favourite establishment can no longer continue operating. All Airdronians have a role to play in ensuring small, local businesses have a future in our community.
