Growing up is about learning what your passions are and how you are going to pursue them. When I entered the journalism program at Mount Royal University just out of high school I knew two things – first, I wanted to travel, meet new people and experience new things. Second, I wanted to have a crazy cool life.
I’ve lived in Calgary for all of my 21 years. I was a wild child with a knack for writing. I can remember filling the pages of colourful notebooks with fictional stories that starred my two cats doing crazy stuff.
This fall I will be completing the last year of my degree and embarking on my newest adventure here at Rocky View Publishing.
This past January, I moved to Nice, France for six months, where I attended a business school while completing a semester abroad. Waking up every day in a new country allowed me to develop a drive to experience everything out there. I was given the opportunity to travel to more than 10 different countries and countless cities in the span of seven months throughout my exchange and after.
Being able to experience other cultures across the world was an opening experience – eyes and mind.
Since returning to Canada, I’ve been readjusting to “normal” life. I spend most of my time either catching up with friends or soaking up the sun in the mountains. I like to run near the river in downtown Calgary or take yoga classes at Hotshop studio.
Last semester my colleague and I put together a short video detailing the new ‘Greenline’ train that would run through the centre of Calgary’s core. It was a school project that changed the way I looked at journalism.
Starting off knowing nothing but the name of this train – by the end of the project I could tell you the name of the community planner, each stop the train would take and all the options it had to get through the Beltline community.
Although trains aren’t exactly what I want to write about, I know I want to learn more about what Airdrie has to offer. I’m looking forward to developing a connection with the community and do some urban exploring. I can’t wait to find out what my favourite places in Airdrie will be.
