Re: "Should Canada boycott the 2022 Olympics?" Column, June 8
Interesting topic from Mr. Strasser – Should Canada boycott the 2022 Olympics? Here is my opinion on this question.
Yes, we should boycott. We should have boycotted the 1936 Olympics that were held in Berlin, Germany. The Canadian and American governments knew at the time that Hitler's Nazi dictatorship was rounding up thousands of Jews and political enemies to fill their death camps. In 1980, finally, the West did boycott the Moscow Olympics due to the human atrocities of the Soviet communist dictatorship.
Yet we reward Communist China by letting them hold the Olympics. Really? Their human rights record is one of the worst in the world. I guess nothing has changed. We still go on and on trying to appease these murderous dictatorial regimes that are proponents of genocide.
Yes, Tricia Smith, president of the Canadian Olympic Committee, wants the Games to go ahead. That's in her best interest, and that's obvious. But behind all the glitter and phony handshakes and phony good will, the Communist Chinese regime is still still systematically executing thousands of Uyghurs and Turkic people in their death camps. We are giving the Communist Chinese government the green light to do this by saying, "Yes, we approve of you hosting the Olympics, and you can carry on your program of genocide at the same time."
