Dear editor,

Right now, we are all facing a global health crisis that is impacting virtually every aspect of our daily lives. As case numbers of COVID-19 continue to surge across Alberta, the people of Airdrie have been asked to change how we work, shop, go to school and interact with friends and family. Although these changes are difficult and often cumbersome, we know they are essential if we hope to slow the transmission of the coronavirus and reduce the stress on our overburdened hospitals.

As Airdrie’s physicians, we are dedicated to doing whatever we can to care for the people of this community through this pandemic – but we can’t do it alone. We need the help of the entire community to be able to do our job effectively. That is why we are especially grateful for a mayor and a city council that share our commitment to the health of the people of Airdrie and who are willing to make the difficult decisions that will help lead us through this crisis.

The City of Airdrie’s decision to institute a mandatory face-covering bylaw was an important step in slowing the spread of transmission and protecting the health of our friends and neighbours, and especially Airdrie’s most vulnerable citizens. Our community’s elderly, medically fragile and chronically ill are counting on all of us to protect them from this deadly virus. Right now, wearing masks, social distancing and frequently handwashing are the best tools in our arsenal to defend ourselves and those we care about from COVID-19. The willingness of Mayor Peter Brown and Airdrie City council to take decisive action and introduce compulsory masking has undoubtedly already saved lives and will likely save many more over the coming weeks.

Although we are heartened by the news of emerging vaccines and the hope those vaccines represent, it is important to remember that while we wait for those vaccines to become available, we are not helpless. We can take action to protect ourselves, our families, our neighbours and our friends by following public health guidelines.

We know the coming holiday season will be far different from what we typically enjoy, but please, let’s all be kind to each other as we do our best to stay healthy and work together to keep our community safe.
