Re: "November is Diabetes Awareness Month," article, Nov. 23

Dear editor,

I’d like to say thank you for bringing light to a complicated, silent disease. There isn’t enough talk about this condition, and we thank you for sharing a great article. We particularly appreciated the correct differentiation between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. They are two different conditions that are often confused.

Our family became part of the Type 1 Diabetes community six years ago. Our son – now 16 years old  – was diagnosed at age 10. The disease came on suddenly and it changed our lives drastically, but as time has gone on, it has become our new norm.

Staying on top of new information and always spreading awareness is key. While living with Type 1 diabetes, our son has overcome many obstacles and is persevering and accomplishing his dreams. As a 16-year-old, he has faced much adversity including judgment from society and the daily management of his diabetes. We couldn’t be more proud of him.
