Getting Back

Airdrie Our View_text

It's no secret the COVID-19 pandemic has radically impacted all facets of society. All levels of government have been disrupted, businesses have adjusted their operations or closed altogether and schools have shifted to online classes. Everyone's life has been affected by the virus.

Our newspaper was not immune. In early April, the decision was made to suspend the print edition of the Rocky View Weekly, and half of our already small newsroom was laid off. Our staff did not know how long this would last or if it was a permanent change.

For the last few months, our reporters have done their best to keep an eye on developments in the County while also shouldering the responsibility of keeping another newspaper afloat. Truthfully, it has been a challenge and we haven't always had the resources or personnel necessary to do the job right.

Alberta is now in the process of gradually reopening. Slowly, businesses are resuming operations and local governments are outlining plans to grant access to public facilities. It feels like things are starting to get back to some sense of normalcy, even though "normal" may look different than it did only a few months ago.

This week, the Rocky View Weekly returns in print form. We are excited to be back. As local journalists, we believe the work we do is important and we're pleased to be able to do it again in Rocky View County.

We're excited to hold power to account, to provide you with fact-based stories and to demand transparency from those in positions of authority.

We're also excited to spotlight the human stories that occur on a daily basis in the County. From Bragg Creek to Balzac to Beiseker, life goes on, and we're eager to search out and share glimpses of what it means to live in Rocky View County at this time.

We hope you missed the Rocky View Weekly during our hiatus and we hope you're as excited as we are about our return.
