With voting day less than a week away, the Rocky View Weekly editorial team would like to take this final issue before Oct. 18 to stress to our readers the importance of voting in the municipal election.
Whether you live in Rocky View County, Beiseker, Irricana, Crossfield or any of the other communities this newspaper covers, we encourage you to take the time to make an informed decision on who you would like to see as your next councillor or school board trustee. There are plenty of options, and some important decisions to make.
When considering Rocky View County council, it's not outlandish to say the current council will be remembered for how dysfunctional they were. The years of 2017 to 2021 were marred by council's legal battles, sanctions, internal conflicts, and code of conduct complaints against each other.
While RVC councillors may be popular in their respective divisions and there were certainly some successes achieved by council, those achievements were unfortunately overshadowed by four years of in-fighting and needless scandals. The vote on Oct. 18 is therefore a crucial opportunity for County residents to consider how they would like to see the next four years play out.
Unfortunately, it seems the dysfunction on council has continued through the campaign period. As our front-page story this week highlighted, candidates have been more than willing to either play dirty or accuse each other of playing dirty.
But regardless of who you want to cast your ballot for, we encourage everyone to practice their democratic responsibility and head to the polls on Oct. 18. If you are still not sure who to vote for, we encourage you to check out our website at AirdrieToday.com.
