Dominant fall for Cobras teams

I don’t know what the parents of high school athletes in Cochrane are feeding their kids, but it appears to be working wonders.

I don’t know what the parents of high school athletes in Cochrane are feeding their kids, but it appears to be working wonders. The Cochrane Cobras varsity football, soccer and volleyball teams have been utterly dominant this fall in the Rocky View Sports Association (RVSA). The Cobras football team’s supremacy is, of course, well-documented. The team hasn’t lost a competitive fixture in four years, and recently captured its fifth consecutive RVSA championship. Cochrane was as strong as ever in 2018, outscoring its league opponents 321-21 in eight games en route to the divisional title. Cochrane has held its top ranking for Tier 3 schools by Football Alberta all season, and is expected to capture an unprecedented fifth consecutive provincial championship later this month. Not to be outdone by the football team, the Cobras’ girls’ soccer team also enjoyed an unbeaten season in the RVSA this fall. The team scored 46 goals in eight matches and conceded only five as it coasted to a second consecutive Rocky View title. The Cobras’ only hiccup came at South Central Zones, with a loss in the gold-medal match against the Holy Trinity Academy Knights, of Okotoks. The defeat prevented Cochrane from winning a third consecutive South Central Zone banner. On the volleyball court, the Cobras’ senior teams have been just as dominant as the school’s football and girls’ soccer teams. As of Nov. 8, Cochrane has not lost even a single set in its march to an expected RVSA championship. The team swept all six of its RVSA opponents during the regular season. On the boys’ side of the court, the Cobras also enjoyed an undefeated (5-0) regular season – though the team was admittedly pushed to the brink Oct. 29, when it defeated the second-place Phoenix in five sets. (The RVSA senior boys’ and girls’ volleyball championships were decided Nov. 9, after press time, between the Cobras and the Springbank Phoenix.) The strong showings from Cobras teams this fall came despite Cochrane High School having just the fourth highest enrolment in Rocky View County, according to Rocky View Schools’ 2018-19 enrolment figures. With 818 students enrolled this year, Cochrane High School falls behind Bert Church High School (1,042 students), W.H. Croxford High School (936 students) and Chestermere High School (885 students). Fewer than 600 students at Cochrane High School are in Grades 10 to 12. If the boy/girl ratio of the school is split, that means nearly one in five eligible male students are on the football team’s 54-player roster. With these enrolment figures in mind, the coaches, players and other personnel who have contributed to the success of the Cobras this fall deserve a pat on the back.
