Conservative commitmnts restoring power, pride to our community

“The Decade of Darkness.” If the name sounds ominous, there’s a good reason for that.

“The Decade of Darkness.”

If the name sounds ominous, there’s a good reason for that. Members of our Canadian Forces still remember the era of neglect they endured under the former Liberal government and the devastating effect that had on the morale of our military.

Our soldiers remember how a Liberal government deployed them to the desert terrain of Afghanistan, with only jungle-green fatigues to wear. And they recall how Jean Chrétien cancelled the EH-101 helicopter agreement, thereby saddling Canada with an aging and increasingly unreliable fleet of Sea Kings.

A lot has changed since our Conservative government came to power in 2006. In stark contrast to the Liberals’ Decade of Darkness, our troops today are getting the tools necessary to do the very demanding job that’s required of them. A new era of investment and renewal is underway within the Canadian Forces as our Government’s Canada First Defence Strategy works to reverse years of Liberal neglect and restore power and pride to our military

Investment has been consistent since our government came to office four years ago, and in recent weeks procurement has ramped up. Last month, we announced two new ships to support the operations of our Canadian Navy, followed soon after by a major investment in new Joint Strike Fighter F-35 aircraft.

The F-35 acquisitions will benefit the economies of communities across Canada, which will be involved in the production and maintenance of these state-of-the-art fighter jets. And the navy ships will be built in Canada and represent a $2.6-billion impact for Canadian shipyards that will produce elements of the new fleet.

But just as importantly, these investments deliver on our government’s commitment to provide the tools our troops need to get their job done. Aside from the economic benefits, these are investments in the long-term future of the Canadian Forces, and in the safety of our nation.

The aircraft give our Forces new abilities to defend Canada’s airspace and provide vital air support wherever Canadian troops serve, while the new ships will increase the range of the Canadian Navy, permitting it to remain at sea for longer without going to shore for replenishment.

The Liberal Decade of Darkness that afflicted Canada’s military truly ended with the election in 2006 of our Conservative Government.
