Column: Planes, trains and automobiles

As things open up more and more on a daily basis, I’m reminded just how busy our little city can get when things are running without restrictions and events are taking off.

As things open up more and more on a daily basis, I’m reminded just how busy our little city can get when things are running without restrictions and events are taking off.

Take this weekend for example; Saturday is going to be a whirlwind of activity. Just about anything to do with transportation (past and present) can be enjoyed all in one weekend. It’s the ultimate transportation-themed stay-cation for Airdrie travel enthusiasts.

It’s been quite a few years since we’ve had an air show at our little air park. Although we won’t have an actual air show on Saturday, we will be the fourth and final stop on the 2021 Alberta Air Tour. Beginning at 11 a.m., vintage planes will be landing at the Airdrie Air Park so that local aviation enthusiasts can get a close look at some aviation history. The event is sponsored by local MLA Angela Pitt and is meant to not only celebrate Alberta's aviation sector, but inspire the next generation of potential pilots as well. This is a free family event.

Also happening on Saturday is the return of the Time Travellers Car Club's annual show-and-shine at Nose Creek Regional Park. This annual event was sorely missed during the pandemic last year, as it usually draws more than 400 classic car entries. From classic cars to muscle cars old and new, it is not only a nostalgic glimpse into the automobiles of the past, but a really cool exhibition of some of the latest and most innovative vehicles. The event usually draws a large number of really cool motorcycles as well.

There will be live entertainment on the stage and food trucks on-site to keep stomachs satisfied throughout the day. Although the car show is a free family event, be sure to take advantage of their 50/50 draws and donate if you can, as all money raised from this event goes to support local charities right here in Airdrie.

Last, but not least, if you haven’t taken the family to Iron Horse Park yet this year, this Sunday would be the perfect day to do so. The whole family can ride replicas of vintage trains throughout the park, learn a little rail history from the volunteers and maybe buy a few snacks or memorabilia from the park's train station. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon and is always a kid pleaser.

Not only is this a great weekend for travel enthusiasts, but it’s also a photographer’s dream. Be sure to bring your camera everywhere you go this weekend, and if the spirit moves you, send a few of your best and favourite pics to us here at the Airdrie City View office as well.
