They took their young family to Africa from 1969 to 1974 where Bill, under the auspices of the Canadian International Development Agency, taught at a Teacher Training College in Ghana, West Africa. They built their Springbank home in 1975. Bill taught math at several Calgary High Schools until his retirement in 1996. He had a strong sense of community; volunteering regularly to work at fund raising casinos, was a founder member of the Springbank Lions Club and served terms as president of both the Springbank Curling and Heritage Clubs.

He was an avid reader, and enjoyed driving, camping, fishing, gardening, skiing, curling, dancing and social sessions of cards.
