Arm wrestling will take centre stage in Airdrie this weekend, as the provincial championships and high school challenge will run at Genesis Place, June 5.

Weigh-ins will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by the youth classes and high school challenge at 1 p.m. and then the open classes at 2 p.m.

Darrell Belyk, founder of CLAWS of Airdrie arm wrestling club and event organizer, said there could be anywhere from 40 to 80 competitors in both men’s and women’s divisions.

“It’s going to be a quite a few and this will hopefully provide more exposure for arm wrestling in the area,” he said.

The open class will act as a qualifier for the Canadian National Championships, which will be held in Winnipeg during the September long weekend.

This weekend’s competition will be the final event of the season for the Airdrie arm wrestling club, before it breaks for the summer and returns in September.

Belyk, a former world champion, said he hopes the inaugural high school challenge component of the event will also turn into an annual occurrence for the Airdrie area.

“There is a lot of interest,” he said. “We’re going to have 100 seats there (set up at Genesis Place) and hopefully we’ll be able to fill them.”

The Alberta provincial arm wrestling championships and high school challenge will take place June 5 from 1-5 p.m. in the Rotary Room at Genesis Place in Airdrie.
