Irricana team takes top honours and raises mega-bucks for cancer research

It was not a bad laundry load that turned the bandanas worn by ball players last weekend in Irricana pink. It was a desire to raise money for Wild Pink Yonder, a breast cancer fundraiser scheduled to pass through Irricana, Aug. 23.

It was not a bad laundry load that turned the bandanas worn by ball players last weekend in Irricana pink. It was a desire to raise money for Wild Pink Yonder, a breast cancer fundraiser scheduled to pass through Irricana, Aug. 23.

The abundance of bandanas seen on the ball players and around town were the work of Sports Day ball tournament organizer Lorainne Lowen and her daughter Raylene who fashioned them from fabric donated by Wal-Mart in Drumheller.

“The entire weekend was fabulous, ” said Lowen. “We even had a cancer survivor and volunteer shave his head at the dance. We had a blast and are so pleased with the financial results. While pledge money may still come in, our profit is at least $2,000, money that we will be able to contribute to the cause. It was very gratifying to not only the organizers, but the ball players to have fun and raise money for such a great cause all at the same time.”

Lowen, an accomplished umpire, has been organizing the Irricana Sports Day ball tournament for more than 20 years and is the recipient of the very prestigious Umpire of the Year award at the 2002 National Slo-pitch Association World Series.

Tournament results from the Irricana Sports Day are:

• A Event Final - The D-bags (Irricana)

• B Event Final - Cartel Energy (Beiseker)

• C Event Final - Hot Box (Cochrane/Irricana)

• D Event Final - Screaming Eagles (Calgary)

• E Event Final - Diesel (Calgary)
