High school volleyball season kicks off for Airdrie teams

The 2019 high-school volleyball season has kicked off, and Airdrie's junior and senior teams teams have all seen action.

In the Rocky View Sports Association (RVSA), the senior boys' and girls' leagues kicked off Sept. 18 with a battle between the George McDougall Mustangs and the Springbank Phoenix. The senior girls' Phoenix ousted the Mustangs in four sets, while Springbank's senior boys' team swept George McDougall in three straight sets.

Bert Church's senior girls' team, meanwhile, swept the Bow Valley Bobcats in three straight sets Sept. 18. The Chargers continued the positive run by beating cross-town rivals, the W.H. Croxford Cavaliers, in four sets Sept. 23.

Bert Church is not fielding a senior boys' team this season.

W.H. Croxford's senior boys' team enjoyed a bye in Weeks 1 and 2, meaning the Cavaliers does not kick off the regular season until Oct. 2, when the team travels to Chestermere to face the Lakers. The Cavs' senior girls' team will also travel to Chestermere that evening for its second game of the season.

RVSA volleyball games take place Wednesday evenings, starting at 6 p.m. For a full schedule, visit rvsa.rockyview.ab.ca.

Airdrie's other high school, St. Martin de Porres, fields its teams in Division 3 of the Calgary Senior High School Athletics Association (CSHSAA). The Kodiaks senior girls' team began its run with a Sept. 19 sweep over the Forest Lawn Titans. The senior boys' team's regular season kicked off Sept. 23, with a lengthy match against the Nelson Mandela United, which ended in a five-set defeat.
