The Edge School’s prep golf program began the 2010-11 season with a historic tournament victory, as Austin Cruickshank won a Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) event at the Coyote Creek Golf Club, just outside San Jose, Calif., Nov. 14.

The Grade 12 student became the first Mountaineer to win a tournament in the United States, shooting a three-under 141 (70-71) during the two rounds and beating Kraig McLeod of Pebble Beach, Calif., on a par-four playoff hole after the final round. He placed his second shot within three feet of the pin and hit the birdie to secure the victory.

“Kind of cool,” said Cruickshank, 17, who plays out of Country Hills Golf Club in Calgary. “It felt good, because I didn’t have a great summer, but I got my game back in the fall. I’m glad I was able to go prove myself in the early winter, at a tournament of this calibre.”

“He’s come a long way in two years with his game and his confidence.” said Randy Robb, head coach and program director of the Edge’s prep golf team.

“Austin came to (Edge School) in Grade 10 – a really good athlete, good lacrosse player, good hockey player. But he didn’t really have a lot of tournament experience (in golf). He’d get to some of the tournaments, and he’d feel a little bit overwhelmed with the competition and the pressure. When it comes to playing in the States, this is the best finish we’ve ever had.”

The six-member Edge team also had Liam Leahy tie for 41st with a 16-over 160 (83-77), Luc Boutin tie for 47th with a 20-over 164 (81-83), Brennan Swanson place 52nd with a 30-over 174 (90-84), and Robbie Dumba place 53rd with a 38-over 182 (95-87). Grade 10 student Nick Scrymgeour placed sixth overall in the boys’ 13-to-15 age category with a 10-over 154 (83-71).

Mountaineers golfers will continue with a camp in Arizona in February, a Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) event in B.C, in March, another FCWT event at Rancho Mirage, Calif., on April 9-10, and other events in May and June. The Alberta provincial junior championships are scheduled for July, while the Canadian junior finals are slated for August.

Robb said his players would keep busy, regardless of the outdoor conditions, because of the Edge’s indoor facilities.

“It’s a lull period, but we have such a good training staff here,” he said. “Meanwhile, I’m addressing some of their fundamental changes – maybe a grip change, or a swing change. Before you know it, it’ll be February, and we’ll need to seriously get back at it.”
