Cochrane Cobras' offence overpowers BC Chargers

The Cochrane Cobras had a deadly strike offence worthy of its nickname - and its No. 1 provincial Tier III ranking - last week.

The Cochrane Cobras had a deadly strike offence worthy of its nickname - and its No. 1 provincial Tier III ranking - last week.

Nik Petros had three touchdown receptions and Kellen Forrest had three rushing touchdowns to lead the Cobras as they trounced the Bert Church Chargers 43-7 in Rocky View Sports Association football action in Cochrane on Sept. 18.

“I thought for our first outing in a couple weeks, we were not too bad,” said Rob McNab, the Cobras’ co-head coach and offensive coordinator.

“We still made simple errors that we need to correct. But we had a good balance of pass/run today and that’s what we’re aiming for.”

“They have so many weapons that they can utilize and their athleticism and timing is just awesome,” said Chargers’ head coach Andy Kirk.

“Obviously, we’d like to have a better result on the scoreboard, but that’s a tribute to the team we played.”

Forrest opened the scoring eight minutes into the first quarter on a two-yard touchdown run. Petros then made it 22-0 before half on two spectacular catches on throws from quarterback Quinn Wilton, one from two yards and one from 40 yards.

“Those two guys are terrific,” McNab said of Petros and Forrest. “Throw in (slotback) Ben Lawrence and you’ve got three of the top kids around. When we get them rolling, it’s tough to take anything away from us.”

Forrest added two more rushing touchdowns in the third quarter, before the Chargers’ Karl Louder broke for 50-yard touchdown run with five minutes left to make the score 36-7.

“That was a nice run by Karl,” Kirk said. “He took the ball and broke a tackle right away and off he went. That’s where our offence was today. If we had a chance to get through Cochrane’s first surge, we did quite well.”

Petros scored his third touchdown of the game with less than two minutes left.

“I think our defence hung in there quite well, we just had a couple mistakes that cost us. They were on the field a lot in the second half though, because Cochrane’s defence did a pretty good number on our offence as well,” Kirk said.

“We run an offence that moves the ball around a lot and Cochrane is really good in their secondary, because they get to see their offence at practice.”

“We worked against what we thought we would see, and some of it worked for us, some of it didn’t,” McNab said.

“Our defence was terrific as well. They’re fast, they’re strong and they were moving. It was a great, fun and entertaining game today.”

In other RVSA football action, the Springbank Phoenix beat the George McDougall Mustangs 28-0 (see story on page 24) and Bow Valley beat Chestermere 37-1.

Chestermere will visit Bert Church on Sept. 24 at 5 p.m., with Bow Valley at Springbank at the same time. Cochrane will head to Airdrie to face George McDougall on Sept. 25 at 12 p.m.
