The Cochrane Cobras officially clinched the Rocky View Sports Association football league title with a 54-7 home win against the crosstown rival Bow Valley Bobcats on Oct. 16.

Quarterback Quinn Wilton threw three touchdown passes to receiver Ben Lawrence and added one on the ground to help keep the No. 1-ranked Cobras undefeated (5W-0L in league play and 8W-0L overall).

Bow Valley (5W-1L, ranked No. 8 in the province) suffered its first loss of the season, but will have another chance to upset the Cobras when the two teams meet again in the RVSA Tier 3 final on Oct. 30.

“Our goal was to win today’s game in order to clinch home field advantage for the next game,” said Cobras’ co-head coach Rob McNab. “It’s a bonus to win the rivalry game. They’re all friends and they all know each other, so it was a real pumped-up situation, but I thought our kids prepared well all week and they played terrific today.”

“Our defence made some great stops on the first three series, as they didn’t score, but the offence couldn’t move the ball and put us in bad positions,” said Bobcats’ offensive coordinator Mick Carlisle. “We thought we could run up the middle on them, but obviously we couldn’t. They then found a weakness in our secondary and really exploited it in the second quarter.”

A defensive first quarter saw its first touchdown when linebacker Lochlan Walker recovered a Bobcat fumble and returned 30 yards into the endzone. Three minutes later, Wilton found Lawrence for the eventual game-winning 25-yard touchdown reception to put Cochrane up 14-0.

Kellen Forrest ran in a two-yard touchdown with 3:46 left in the half, before Bow Valley’s lone highlight of the game came on a 45-yard touchdown pass. But the success was short-lived, as Wilton and Lawrence hooked up for two more scoring passes, one from five yards and one from 10, to put Cochrane ahead 33-7 at the half.

“We were a little nervous at the start, but thought that we jumped on them pretty quick,” McNab said.

The Cobras’ first play of the second half was a 65-yard rushing touchdown by Forrest. They would add Wilton’s quarterback keeper one-yard TD run and a late 55-yard interception return by linebacker Dustin Bennett to complete the scoring.

“Having (our defence) score really, really helps, as it takes pressure off the offence,” McNab said. “Now we’ll watch the film, keep the kids in good shape, and just work hard against these guys because we still have another game to play.”

“We have a whole offensive set we haven’t shown them yet, and this was an important game, but the next one is more important,” Carlisle said. “We’ll be back here in two weeks.”

The RVSA Tier 3 final will see Bow Valley play the Cobras at the Cochrane High field on Oct. 30. Game time is noon.
