Athlete recognition program to honour local talent

Airdrie’s elite athletes will be recognized at Genesis Place with a wall of fame.

City council approved the Airdrie Elite Athlete Recognition Program, June 21.

“With the development of a state-of-the-art facility, some Airdrie residents have an expectation that the City should start to recognize athletes that have achieved exceptional status in their sport,” said Kim Harris, community developer with the City. “The purpose is to recognize contributions and accomplishments in sport as well as significant community involvement of individuals that have considerable ties to Airdrie.”

Residency will be defined as anyone living within the Airdrie school boundary map. Athletes must have a minimum residency of three years along with significant community contributions such as volunteerism, being a member of a club or organization or attending school in Airdrie. Nominees must excel in a national or international competition. For team nominations, a minimum of 50 per cent of the team must be Airdrie residents.

“I think the wall of fame is really very cool and creative,” said Alderman Kelly Hegg.

“We were looking for something very basic to recognize our athletes and this is keeping it simple.”

Alderman Marlene Weaver was very supportive of the recognition.

“We have a lot of outstanding athletes,” she said. “It is a great idea to honour them in our new facility.”
