Crossfield’s W.G. Murdoch is upholding Rocky View Schools’ mandate to emphasize digital-based learning.

Teachers Shelley Cunningham and Vern Gray presented a report to Rocky View Schools trustee board, Jan. 20 about their strides in the online world. Cunningham spoke of her 25-student Grade 10-1 English class, who have posted more than 1,500 responses to an online discussion board in three months.

“The students we thought weren’t getting it, are getting it. Here, they are providing me with something,” she said.

Gray said the online world is a great way to gather data and student ideas.

“Often teachers are very busy. This is a place to streamline and collect information,” he said. “It’s starting to change the culture of our school.”

Vice-Chair Bev LaPeare praised the teachers’ efforts and said they have made her a believer.

“When we first got so technologically advanced, there was a great fear our staff would lose quite a sense of connectedness,” she said. “It seems quite the opposite (has happened).”

When Ward 3 Trustee Don Thomas asked the pair if they have a greater or lesser role with enhanced digital emphasis, the answer was easy to decode.

“I think I have a greater role,” said Cunningham.

“I don’t just come in at the end (of discussions).

It was clear the trustees and superintendents were quite impressed.

“I’d like to commend all the staff,” said Greg Bass, superintendent of schools. “In so many ways, you’re modelling our 21st Century characteristics. We’re all learners.”
