Airdrie RCMP responded to a fatal collision May 8, where it was later confirmed a 17-year-old female was pronounced deceased at the scene. The incident occurred on Highway 567 and Range Road 285.

Friends have identified the victim as George McDougall High School student Jacqueline Avery, of Irricana. According to an obituary posted to Lyle Reeves Funerals in High River, the 17-year-old “passed away suddenly near Airdrie.”

Lyle Reeves Funerals have set up an online Tribute Wall and obituary page in which Avery is described as “a beautiful soul and spirited girl, we would look over and she would be cheering us on despite how we were the competition within many tournaments.” Students at the school report Avery was involved with volleyball.

Avery was heading eastbound when she lost control of her vehicle, according to the RCMP release, which stated, “the female’s vehicle entered the path of a westbound vehicle, resulting in the collision.” Heavy hail was reported at the time of the incident, according to RCMP, resulting in Avery losing control of the vehicle.

Two elderly people in the other vehicle were transported to hospital with undetermined injuries. STARS Air Ambulance confirmed the man was transported to the Foothills Medical Centre in stable condition.

Rocky View Schools Director of Communications Angela Spanier said she could not comment on the incident, but noted additional support had been brought into the school to help students and staff to cope following the collision.
