The Government of Canada will announce May 14 which community has won its Smart Cities Challenge – and a delegation from Airdrie will be heading to Ottawa for a full day of events and activities with representatives of the other 19 competing municipalities.
“Over 18 months ago, communities were challenged to think big and come up with innovative approaches to solving local issues by using data and connected technology,” stated a press release from Infrastructure Canada. “We asked for approaches that could be replicated by communities across the country and the world to improve the quality of life of their residents.”
More than 130 applications were narrowed down to 20 finalists, which received a $250,000 grant from the Government of Canada to develop their final proposals for a chance to win the $10-million and $50-million prize categories. According to Intergovernmental Liaison Leona Esau, Airdrie is a finalist in the $10-million category, which offers two prizes to be awarded among 10 finalists.
She added Airdrie’s presentation will be livestreamed at 2 p.m. EDT May 14, with the awards celebration starting just after 4 p.m. EDT.
