The Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre (SLSFSC) expansion project received an $800,000 boost from Rocky View County, Oct. 6.

The money comes from the County’s provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) funding.

“Rocky View County recognizes the importance of its investment in the community,” said Division 9 Councillor Paul McLean, who also serves on the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre board.

“As always, we remain committed to recreation and to facilitating and enhancing leisure, sports and recreational opportunities for our residents wherever possible. In collaboration with our municipal neighbours, our community donors, and the Province of Alberta, we are able to do so on a larger scale, and in a way that benefits multiple communities.”

McLean was on hand to present the cheque, which will help complete phase three of the recreation facility’s $12.5 million expansion, which includes the construction of two NHL-sized ice rinks and more than 200,000 square feet of added common and retail space.

The facility, once completed, will be the only tri-arena facility in the Calgary region.

John Clarkson, SLSFSC chair, welcomed the additional funding.

“The society appreciates all the support it has received from the County over the years,” said Clarkson. “Rocky View’s latest financial commitment marks an important milestone in taking phase three of the SLSFSC’s expansion to completion.”

Since 2000, the County has contributed more than $4 million in funding to the facility, which is co-owned by Rocky View County and the Town of Cochrane.
