On July 23 at about 1:20 p.m., Cochrane RCMP responded to a serious collision involving a motorcycle on Highway 1A, just east of the Morley Road.

The driver of the bike sustained severe leg injuries. He was transported by ambulance to the Foothills Hospital and underwent emergency surgery. Police determined that a forklift arm fell off a flatbed truck and collided with the motorbike.

The semi truck was travelling westbound and the motorcycle was driving eastbound. The semi truck has not been located and police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating the vehicle.

The truck is described as an older model white semi with a flat deck. At the time of the collision, it may have been hauling scrap metal including the forklift arm. The driver of the semi may not be aware that he lost the forklift arm.

Children fall from window

At around 4 p.m. on July 27, the Chestermere RCMP was called to a Parkmere Green residence. They discovered two young children had fallen out of a second-floor window.

The young children were left momentarily unattended in an upstairs bedroom by a parent. It appears the young children leaned against the window screen, which gave way, causing the pair to fall about 20 feet onto the lawn below. It is unclear if the window was left open. Small handprints on the glass suggest the window was moved. Furniture was situated near the window.

Rocky View (Chestermere) Fire Services and EMS treated the injuries. The children were transported to a Calgary hospital. One child sustained a broken leg and is expected to make a full recovery. The second child suffered minor abrasions.

The Chestermere RCMP is conducting an investigation. At this time, no charges are being considered. Parents and caregivers are reminded of the dangers of open upper floor windows and how quickly young people can place themselves at risk.

Child left in car

Charges are pending against a man after he left a toddler in a car at the Stoney Nakoda Casino.

On July 24 at about 2:40 p.m., security at the casino located a small child locked inside a van in the parking lot. The parents of the toddler could not be located. All doors and windows were locked. Security reported that the child looked to be in distress as the temperature climbed to 26°C.

Police entered the vehicle by breaking a passenger’s side window of the van. The toddler was covered in sweat and dehydrated. After being assessed by EMS personnel, the toddler was released.

The names of those involved are being withheld to protect the identity of the toddler.

“Please be reminded of the high risk involved when a child is left in a vehicle unattended, regardless of the environment,” said Cochrane RCMP Cst. Rodney MacIntyre.

Near miss

Strathmore RCMP are searching for a car that veered head-on toward a carload of teenagers, forcing them off the highway.

On July 26 around 1 a.m., police said a grey or beige GMC was travelling westbound on Highway 1 in the eastbound lanes.

A Neon carrying five young people was forced to swerve to avoid the GMC, ending up in the ditch and crashing through a barbed wire fence. The car came to rest in a field.

Police said a semi driver blew an air horn to warn oncoming motorists.

The GMC swerved across Highway 1 at the intersection of Highway 21, crossing over to the westbound lanes and continuing westbound on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Police said none of the teens were injured.

Break and enter

On June 29, Strathmore RCMP responded to a break, enter and theft from a residence in the Strathmore rural area.

Unknown suspects gained entry to the residence through the garage.

Once inside, the culprits backed a vehicle up to the front of the house and loaded it with stolen property.

Missing property includes bedroom chairs, leather living room furniture, lamps, bedroom linens, clothing, coats, candles, watches, rare antique swords, a front-load washer and dryer, rare artwork, files, computer monitor and beer.

Two driveway lamps outside the front of the house were broken by the culprits’ vehicle. The total value of missing and broken items is estimated at about $50,000.

Water Valley chop shop

On July 26, the Didsbury RCMP laid charges against a man and a woman in relation to stolen property that was recovered during a search on July 11 in the Water Valley area.

Kenneth Lyle Hodgins and Andrea Phillane Silljer from Water Valley have been charged with 10 counts of possession of stolen property of more than $5,000 and one count of possession of stolen property under $5,000. Hodgins and Silljer will attend Didsbury Provincial Court Aug. 30.
