The annual municipal census deadline is near.

Census data must be collected either online or from a census worker by May 22.

“It’s really, really important that the City has accurate information to plan for the future,” said Sharon Pollyck, City clerk.

“We receive grant money based on our population and if we can get an accurate count, that is less tax money we need to accrue.”

As well, many of the grants received from the Province are awarded on a per capita basis and a census count ensures that maximum grants are received. The City gets $312 per person in grants.

The census count reflects the growth of the city and assists different departments in planning for the needs of the citizens of Airdrie, added Pollyck. Decisions regarding future transportation networks, the locations of schools, parks, utilities and fire protection facilities are based, to a large extent, on statistics on population growth collected in the municipal census.

Online PIN numbers were mailed to residents on April 1. The City has been working with an online census option for about six years, making it easier for residents to respond. Census workers were dispatched in the community on April 25.

“We are finding this year it is much harder to get residents to respond back for some reason,” said Pollyck.

If you haven’t received your PIN, call the city at 403-948-8800.

Pollyck said adding to the problem is the fact that two censuses are currently taking place, municipal and federal, and people are mixing up the two and telling enumerators they’ve already completed the census.

“The easiest way to distinguish between the census is the fact that the piece of paper the City mailed out is bright pink and has a shorter PIN number,” she said.

This year, enumerators are using iPads to collect the information.

“The iPad is faster and lighter for them to carry and we’ve had no technical glitches this year,” said Pollyck.
