Mochas With Mounties continues May 22

Airdrie RCMP will hold its fourth Mochas With Mounties May 22 at the Good Earth Coffeehouse and Bakery, located at 1109 35 MacKenzie Way S.W., from 6 to 8 p.m.

The monthly meet-ups offer Airdrie residents the chance to sit down and ask questions to local RCMP officers in an informal setting.

“Mochas with Mounties is going over very well with the citizens of Airdrie,” said Airdrie RCMP Media Relations Officer Cst. Gina Slaney.

“It’s a great way for us to get out there and interact with the public in a positive manner. We look forward to doing this every month.”

The initiative began in February, with subsequent events taking place in March and April. While the number of attendees was not tracked, Slaney estimated a few dozen people particpate each month.

“We had a lot of people come out to speak about a variety of topics, and everyone who came seemed to be happy with policing in Airdrie,” she said, adding there are many reasons why Airdronians want to talk to local law enforcement.

“We’ve had questions from RCMP applicants wanting to know about the application and recruiting process. We’ve had questions about how to resolve neighbourhood disputes. Nothing of real seriousness or major [concern], but just questions people have in the back of their minds, that they’re able to come and have a coffee with us and ask those questions.”

The May edition will be the first Mochas with Mounties event to take place during the evening – something Slaney said many people have requested.

“That’s the suggestion we’ve been getting every time we do these, that people can’t come during the day, and would like an evening one. Hopefully, we do get a good attendance.

Those in attendance will include members of Airdrie’s Citizens on Patrol and the RCMP’s Technological Crime Unit – a support unit that performs digital forensics on cell phones and computers.

“We’re trying to recruit other volunteers for Citizens on Patrol and we’re going to have our tech crimes unit there, to talk about what they do and how they help in investigations,” Slaney said.
