Airdrie will be also recognizing the contributions of the Métis people – 2,261 of whom currently reside in the municipality – from Nov. 12 to 17 for Métis Week.

The proclamation request from the Métis Nation of Alberta – Region 3 unanimously approved by City council will see the Métis Nation flag raised throughout the week. Additionally, City Hall will be illuminated in blue for Louis Riel Day Nov. 16, to commemorate the passing of the Métis leader, advocate and “Father of Manitoba.”

“Métis Week is vital to our beautiful city and it recognizes Peter Fidler’s journey along the Nose Creek in the 1750s as a significant historical journey to the Bow River, as well as Edmonton Trail being an historical cart trail that linked Fort Edmonton to Fort Calgary,” said Lawrence Gervais, regional president.

“The Métis Nation of Alberta – Region 3 encourages citizens of Airdrie to learn more about the important role Métis people played in the history of our city, province and country.”
