An oily sheen in a commercial parking lot in the 100 Block of Main Street South July 16, prompted a response from the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) and a Rapid Response HazMat team. The cause of the spill remains under investigation.

Firefighters initially deployed absorbent pads and booms, according to an AFD release, to contain the spill before it could make its way to an adjacent natural waterway.

“Water Services staff monitored the underground storm-water system to determine how much of their infrastructure had been affected,” the release stated. “Plugs were installed in the storm sewer pipes to protect against further contamination if heavier rains were to occur prior to final clean-up being completed.”

The HazMat team assisted AFD with the removal and disposal of all contaminated materials, according to AFD, and, initially, four pieces of apparatus and thirteen firefighters were on scene.

There were no injuries to report.
