Alleged murderer Michael Roebuck's lawyer is seeking bail for his client before setting a trial date.

According to a report from the Calgary Herald, Roebuck's defence counsel Kim Ross told court on Jan. 22 that he is working on setting a bail hearing for Roebuck, who faces a first-degree murder charge for a shooting that took place in Airdrie in September 2019.

Roebuck, who is now 61, was arrested on Sept. 7, 2019 following a shooting on Canoe Close in the Canals District. According to RCMP, the shooting was deemed a "planned and deliberate" assault. The victim, 57-year-old Daniel Macdonald, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The men were neighbours, and they are known to each other," said Cpl. Gina Slaney, Airdrie RCMP media relations officer, in the days after the murder. "It wasn't just a random attack."

The Herald's report stated Crown prosecutor Jim Sawa said he "was not opposed to Ross determining his client’s custodial status before scheduling a trial date." Court of Queen's Bench Justice Glen Poelman adjourned the case for two weeks, according to the newspaper's report, in the hopes a bail hearing would be scheduled in the interim.

Roebuck was previously denied bail in the weeks following the shooting. According to the Herald report, he returns to court on Feb. 5.
