Following a request from Volunteer Airdrie, Dec. 3 has been proclaimed as GivingTuesday – part of a national initiative that began in 2013.

“It is a new Canadian movement for online giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Cyber Monday,” read the letter submitted by David Maffitt, Volunteer Airdrie Society chair. “The ‘opening day of the giving season,’ it is a day where charities, companies and individuals join together to share commitments, rally for favourite causes and think about others.”

According to Maffitt, Airdrie was highlighted in last year’s national event results, with the Rotary Club of Airdrie’s Dragon’s Den event awarding $20,000 to several local organizations.

Airdrie City council approved Volunteer Airdrie's request unanimously at a regular meeting Nov. 18. Coun. Tina Petrow was absent for the vote.
