For the second time this month, a fuel spill on the roadway in front of a residence is under investigation.
The Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to the spill on Summerwood Road S.E. March 23 at 2:30 p.m., according to a release from the City.
Crews determined an unknown amount of diesel had been spilled and, with help from melting snow and ice, had travelled approximately 100 yards and into the storm sewer system.
Firefighters deployed absorbent pads and booms to prevent contaminates from entering adjacent Nose Creek, according to the release, and staff from Public Works, Water Services and Municipal Enforcement attended to assist with initial investigation and mediation efforts.
Water Services monitored the underground storm water system to determine how much of the infrastructure had been affected, the release stated, and a Rapid Response HazMat team was dispatched to the scene to assist AFD with removal and disposal of all captured contaminated materials.
This incident remains under investigation.
A similar diesel fuel spill occurred in front of a King's Heights Road residence March 6. Like the most recent incident, melting snow and ice aided the fuel in travelling down the road and into the sewer system and the City said the direct cause of spill remained unknown.
