A recognizable politician is seeking election in Rocky View County’s Division 8.

Former Rocky View School Division trustee (1995-1998) and County councillor (2004-2007), Gerry Neustaedter is seeking a spot on County council.

Neustaedter, who has a background in construction and is currently a local realtor, first moved to Bearspaw in 1989, where he raised his four daughters.

Neustaedter has been actively involved in the community as a volunteer with many boards, including the Cochrane Christmas Light-Up and the Cochrane Labour Day Parade.

“I was instrumental in getting Bearspaw School,” said Neustaedter. “I was honoured by the trustee and recognized as being the founder.”

He has also been active in provincial and federal politics.

If elected, Neustaedter said he would work to prevent high-density development in Bearspaw and to maintain a permanent boundary between Calgary and the area.

He would also work towards ensuring a senior’s facility and more recreation for local residents.

“When you work with doing development of any kind and changing the community at all, you have to look at saying what will (the residents) say when it is all said and done,” said Neustaedter, adding that many Bearspaw residents would support a coffee house or recreational facility.

A key issue for Neustaedter is the separation sentiment present in west Rocky View.

“The alienation that many feel needs to be addressed whole heartedly,” said Neustaedter. “My campaign slogan is ‘end the chaos,’” said Neustaedter. “There seems to be a feeling that the western part of Rocky View is supporting development in the north and east.”

If elected, Neustaedter said council should listen to what the residents want when making decisions.

“Putting growth nodes in the area means the councillors aren’t listening to the people,” said Neustaedter. “Bearspaw doesn’t want two villages and towns between Calgary and Cochrane.”

Neustaedter said it is acceptable to develop differently throughout the county.

“But the area councillors’ wishes need to be respected, because he listens to the people and responds to their view,” he said.
