Former Airdrie police officers join RCMP's Musical Ride

Two former Airdrie RCMP members will be touring the country with the Musical Ride this summer.

Husband and wife Jason Morin and Kelli Gaudet met while working at the Airdrie RCMP from 2005 to 2008 and are now on tour with the RCMP Musical Ride.

“When I was a little girl in PEI, I saw the Musical Ride and I said, ‘I’m going to that when I grow up,’” said Gaudet.

She said she became a RCMP member so she could take part in the Musical Ride.

“It is amazing to watch, the red serge and black horses – it makes you so proud to be Canadian. The best part is, I’m not only representing thousands of members who work hard to keep the community safe everyday, I’m representing Canada and Canadian history.”

Gaudet and Morin now live in Ontario and are looking forward to touring the country with the Ride from May to October.

Members of the Musical Ride are police officers who, after at least two years of active police work, volunteer for duty with the Musical Ride.

Most members are non-riders prior to their equestrian training with the RCMP.

However, once they complete the courses of instruction, they not only become riders but ambassadors of goodwill.

Working through a unique medium, they promote the RCMP’s image throughout Canada and the world.

“I am a police officer first but I always wanted to do the Ride,” said Morin, who joined this year after seeing how much his wife enjoyed participating last year.

“I always wanted to be an officer since I was about six. I like dealing with people and everyday is different. The best part of being on the Ride is the riding. Being on a horse, representing my country, it means a lot.”

Today, in keeping with tradition, a full troop of 32 riders and horses, plus the member in charge, perform the Musical Ride.

The Musical Ride consists of a variety of intricate figures and cavalry drill choreographed to music.

The Musical Ride will trot into Irricana on July 15 and Gaudet is thrilled to visit the Airdrie area.

“I’m so excited,” she said. “I would consider Alberta my second home so I am excited to see people we worked with in the community we served. It was one of the places I wanted to go back to, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Gaudet and Morin said they loved the people in Airdrie and enjoyed the small town feeling and big city amenities.

Gaudet encourages all Airdrie and area residents to come out and enjoy the show this summer.

“This is something you don’t want to miss,” she said. “It is an amazing thing to see. It is fantastic and it makes you realize how lucky we are to be Canadian.”
