Airdrie’s Canada Day fireworks literally turned to fire, as hot embers ignited dry grass in Nose Creek Park on July 1.
“The fireworks had only lasted a couple of minutes when several apparently dry spots near the launch area burst into flame,” said Airdrie Festival of Lights Chair Bob Abbott.
“The overhead show stopped for 18 minutes while Airdrie firefighters put out the fires. The fireworks then resumed and ran their intended course.”
Abbott apologized to those who left when the fire started.
“Unfortunately, many who came for the fireworks were unaware that the fireworks would continue, and we were unable to predict whether or not the show would continue, for several minutes. We’re sorry your show was cut short.”
The Canada Day fireworks are presented by the City of Airdrie and the Airdrie Festival of Lights.
“Thanks to the prompt and efficient response by the Airdrie Fire Department, which was standing by, we were able to finish the fireworks,” said Abbott.
“On behalf of everyone who came out for the show, we thank the firefighters for their excellent work.”
