Electric scooters like the one spotted here in Calgary will soon be coming to Airdrie, after council's approval of a two-year micro-mobility pilot project.

Airdronians will soon be able to roll in style.

At their meeting on June 6, Airdrie City council approved a two-year pilot program that will bring shared modes of micro-mobility options to the community, including e-scooters, as well as the necessary changes to the City of Airdrie's bylaws to support micro-mobility vehicles.

The pilot will begin in the early summer and run until the end of October 2023, according to a City press release.

“I’m looking forward to e-scooters launching in our city,” stated Mayor Peter Brown in the release. “Many neighbouring municipalities have introduced shared e-scooters and e-bikes with remarkable success. This is an environmentally sustainable transportation option that will help connect our community, while being incredibly fun to ride.”

“E-scooters, shared e-scooters and other forms of micro-mobility such as e-bikes are a wonderful way to explore Airdrie, car-free,” added Chris MacIsaac, team leader for Airdrie Transit.

MacIsaac pointed out how Airdrie has over 140 kilometres of paved pathways – roughly the distance from Airdrie to Banff – that residents can explore or commute on.

The City will engage three licensed providers in the first year of the pilot project. The release addes these three licensed providers will be selected on a first come, first served basis, and must be able to comply with specific criteria. Interested providers can apply at airdrie.ca/escooters

Private providers may be launching in Airdrie early summer, according to the City. The municipality “will be rolling out messages over the next few months to remind personal and shared mobility users about safety during the pilot.”

Council previously debated the merits of micro-mobility travel options in April. To read about that discussion, click here.
