Division waiting for official word on funding

Rocky View’s Board of Trustees will not spend any provincial money before it is officially designated.

Rocky View’s Board of Trustees will not spend any provincial money before it is officially designated. Trustees approved the formation of an Action Plan Generative Governance committee and will implement a specific calendar development program for the coming years.

The three motions were the primary topics discussed and approved during the regular school board meeting in Airdrie on Oct. 6. With new Premier Alison Redford expected to announce the specifics of her re-establishment of $107 million of education funding, previously cut by former premier Ed Stelmach, any day, Superintendent of Schools Greg Bass proposed the allocation for some of the expected money.

He requested that $750,000 be provided to Human Resources contingency and $500,000 to resource allocation. The trustees, however, unanimously voted to re-visit the subject following an official statement by the new provincial leader, in case there were any specific funding stipulations.

Trustees Bev LaPeare and Norma Lang will head the newly formed Action Plan Generative Governance committee, which will help direct the Rocky View Schools’ new 2011-14 three-year plan. The board also approved first read of the calendar development program, originally introduced on May 19. Its primary purpose will be to define the boundaries of the school year several years in advance.

Totem Building Supplies has been named as the title sponsor of the upcoming Calgary Flames’ alumni game at Crossfield’s Pete Knight Arena on Oct. 15. The company will donate $7,500 and is expected to make a major announcement following the game.

Ward 3 Trustee Don Thomas also made a proposal to set up a discussion period to weigh the pros, cons and potential resource allocation for the possible introduction of live video feeds of future public board meetings. The trustees will debate the topic on Oct. 20.
