The Provincial Government notified Crossfield that its 1,750-acre annexation was approved, June 22.

Negotiations for the annexation, which will more than double the area, have been ongoing since 2006.

Prior to the annexation, the area of the town was seven-quarter sections, or approximately 1,120 acres. This annexation added another 11-quarter sections to the town’s area, bringing the total amount of land under the jurisdiction of Crossfield to 2,870 acres.

“The MGB annexation approval was based upon the projection that the annexed 11 quarter sections of land would accommodate up to 35 years of growth,” said Don Schultz, Town planner for Crossfield. “The expanded town area is expected to house a total population of 12,000 to 15,000 persons.”

The annexation went ahead uncontested when an open house was held Nov. 25, 2009. About 50 people attended, none of them spoke against the proposal.

Schultz says the annexation not only gives the Town the opportunity to plan land uses and infrastructure for a greater population, but also to work with other agencies such as Rocky View School Division, Alberta Health Services, and the Calgary Regional Partnership to provide essential community and public services.

Schultz says Crossfield has already garnered interest from commercial, industrial and residential developers.

“We expect that some of these developers will immediately start working on new area structure plans within the annexed area,” said Schultz. “We expect that certain developers will be ready to hold public open houses for their area structure plans this autumn. The Town encourages the people of Crossfield to get involved and provide their views on how (the town’s) new residential and industrial areas should be developed.”

Schultz says that following guidelines for a sustainable community is important to ensuring the growth is beneficial for the town.

“That’s why the Crossfield Sustainability Plan and its companion plans, the new Municipal Development Plan and the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan are so critical for laying the foundation for the responsible growth in Crossfield over the decades to come,” he said.
