Crossfield Town council was presented with a report from administration concerning the replacement of the Town’s entranceway signs along the 2A corridor.
One sign was removed after being badly damaged in storms last summer, and council directed administration to research prices for new signage.
Four quotes and designs were submitted, with prices ranging from $1,671 to more than $15,000.
With the wheels turning on downtown revitalization and town entranceway modifications, Council decided to pass the matter on to the citizen committee responsible for the beautification of downtown.
“The sign at the south side of Crossfield adjacent to Hwy 2A was destroyed last summer during the summer storms,” said Deputy Mayor Jacky Vang. “Council made a motion to forward information to the Downtown & Entrance Area Redevelopment Steering Committee for their input.”
Council is not looking to replace the signs right away, as the funds for such a project have been taken off the books, but wants to allow the committee to research every possibility and find alternative ways to fund the project.
“The sign is important to welcome people to the community. The Parks Department does a fantastic job of maintaining the plants in this area and to have a welcome sign back in place will enhance the friendly nature of our community,” said Vang.
“By allowing public input into the sign selection, the creativity on the community will potentially be show cased. With limitations on funds, there will be opportunity for the group to look for ways to fund the sign as well.”
No exact timeline has been given for the installment of a new sign, but council says it will be treating this year as a ‘planning year’ for the project.
A letter was sent to the Town of Crossfield concerning the parking of recreational vehicles along streets in the town.
The letter asks for a bylaw forbidding any such storage of recreational vehicles, busses, trailers and boats on the road and on private properties in the residential parts of Crossfield.
“I think we always need to be aware of what other communities are doing and the changes they are making to their bylaws,” said Councillor Norma Lang. “Over the last decade RV ownership has changed dramatically. Units today are much much larger and a much larger proportion of Crossfield citizens own RVs today compared to even six years ago when I first was elected to council. As these trends emerge we need to be responsive to the needs of both RV owners and the neighbours on their streets who stand to be impacted.”
Council will wait for feedback from the local Municipal Enforcement Unit before it goes ahead with any bylaws.
“The MEU are the ones at the front lines responding to bylaw inquiries of this nature,” said Lang. “We need their input to effectively gauge the relevance and importance of the issue as it stands today.”
The Westgate subdivision in Crossfield will undergo a minor change, as one area that was originally set out to be a through-street crescent will now be developed into two cul-de-sacs.
The Westgate subdivision is being developed by Greenfield Developments Inc.
The crescent was originally going to be called Shantz Crescent, but will now become Shantz Place and Stevens Place.
Council approved the motion to rename the streets, passing the cost on to the development company.
