2019 has been proclaimed as the Year of Healthy Living, following a unanimous vote by Airdrie City council Jan. 21.

Airdrie residents can look forward to spending the year focused on living healthy – as individuals, as families and as a community – following a proclamation by City council at a regular meeting Jan. 21. Following a notice of motion presented by Mayor Peter Brown, council voted unanimously to proclaim 2019 as the Year of Healthy Living. “A new energy is moving through our community, which draws strength from the collaborative spirit of our pioneer roots and shows us opportunity to flourish, grow and lead healthy lives as individuals and as a community,” he said. The term “healthy,” he added, encompasses both physical and mental well-being. In accordance with the municipality’s goal of becoming Canada’s Healthiest Community, Brown said, the initiative will provide residents with the knowledge to make informed health decisions and will promote opportunities for activity, connection and purpose.

Celebrating the arts

Another proclamation, requested by Jennifer Benner – board chair with Creative Airdrie Society, on behalf of the Airdrie Mayor’s Night of Arts Awards Planning Committee – was also passed unanimously. Following council’s vote, Jan. 26 has been proclaimed as Arts Celebration and Recognition Day, and City hall will be illuminated in green. “Our strategic goals are to showcase, support and raise the profile of a variety of different local talent in Airdrie,” Benner stated in her letter to council. “It is critical that we successfully demonstrate economic diversity and opportunities in the arts and culture industry, for our artists, our youth and our residents.”

Supporting seniors

Council voted unanimously to send a letter in support of Airdrie’s Seniors Week Planning Committee’s interest to co-host the Seniors Week Provincial Launch event, scheduled for June 3. “We value the dedication and enthusiasm of Airdrie’s Seniors Week Planning Committee in celebrating seniors and their contributions to our developing community,” the letter states. According to the letter, council has “continuously supported” the committee’s annual celebration during seniors week, which has been hosted in Airdrie for the past 14 years. In that time, the event has grown from a small gathering for cake and coffee to a luncheon with more than 300 seniors in attendance.

Venue Sponsor

This year’s AIRSCARES Halloween attraction will once again be hosted at the Main Street Fire Hall, following a unanimous council vote to approve a request for the City to serve as the venue sponsor for the 2019 event. Produced by the Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie (BGCA), AIRSCARES is an annual fundraiser that provides the organization with operational dollars to support the programming it offers youth, children and families throughout the year. According to Jessica Nash, manager of events and volunteers with BGCA, the event involves more than 400 volunteers and a number of business and community partners.
