Sections of Main Street will be completely closed this summer, as the City of Airdrie's Water Services department installs new water main and sanitary sewer pipe between Veterans Boulevard and Elk Hill.

According to a press release issued by the City, the current water and sanitary sewer system in these areas is reaching the end of its life cycle, and a replacement is necessary. The project, the release states, will prepare the community for future growth and will help ensure that the City's infrastructure does not fail at "inopportune times."

“We understand closing Main Street will have a significant impact, especially to the business community,” said Glenn Archer, team leader with Water Services. “However, this approach will allow the project to be completed sooner and will be less expensive in the long run.”

The City recently held a business information session and conducted visits with each affected business, in an effort to keep local business owners informed.

As of May 1, the contract tender has been closed and the City is currently reviewing bids, according to the press release. Once a contract has been awarded for the work and the phased road closure schedule is confirmed, maps and detours will be posted on www.airdrie.ca/mainst

The release adds no water shut-offs are expected for businesses or residents, and any disruption in sewer service will be short-term and communicated at least 24 hours in advance. Water Services has also been in contact with emergency services to create emergency access plans for each phase of construction, states the release.

If residents or business owners have any questions or concerns, these can be directed to Water Services at 403-948-8871.
