Cochrane Christian School continues to grow, will add Grade 8 next year

Trustees voted to make Cochrane Christian School its own entity within Mitford Middle School at its Feb. 3 board meeting. Beginning in 2007 as a K-4 pilot project with 46 students, it has now grown to 122 students operating as a K-7.

Trustees voted to make Cochrane Christian School its own entity within Mitford Middle School at its Feb. 3 board meeting.

Beginning in 2007 as a K-4 pilot project with 46 students, it has now grown to 122 students operating as a K-7. Next year, it will expand to Grade 8.

“Consideration must now be given to move this program to its next rational stage of development, which is to create a school within a school,” said Greg Bass, superintendent of schools, adding it would share a joint budget and administrative space and with Mitford.

“Cochrane Christian would therefore continue as a K-8 school well into the future, although with a long-term goal of one day housing the school in separate infrastructure.”

Ward 4 Trustee Helen Clease said she was “really pleased to see the success of this program” and Vice-Chair Bev LaPeare called the school’s progress “obviously successful.”

“I really like this program because it does operate under all the same rules and regulations as all our schools do,” said Ward 3 Trustee Sylvia Eggerer. “I know we talked about this in the past, but we need to talk about our other alternative programs and that they comply with what we need as Rocky View Schools as well.”

Cochrane Christian School’s attendance next year is estimated to be between 140 and 150 students.
