Mayor Peter Brown held a news conference March 16 to provide the community with information on how the City is adjusting to COVID-19. Though the update was streamed live on the City's Facebook page, the audio was a problem throughout with many leaving comments about it.
"The safety and well-being of Airdrie residents remains the top priority of the City," stated a presser released following the news conference.
The mayor outlined measures being taken at City-owned facilities in response to the virus.
Genesis Place Recreation Centre, Rob Ebbesen Arena and Plainsmen arena, which were closed effective today, will remain closed until further notice.
"The safety and wellbeing of our facility users and employees is our top priority as we recognize the importance of taking proactive measures in response to COVID-19," states the City's website.
Continuous passes (including all facility and childcare passes) have been placed on hold and payments will be stopped immediately, according to the City. Unused time will appear as a credit on your account.
Kids Connection Preschool, located in Genesis Place, is closed and, according to the release, parents are being contacted by phone with information on next steps.
The City said organizers of events booked at the centre will be contacted and credits for registered program will be issued credit for ay unused programming in the coming weeks.
Lifemark, which operates independently of Genesis Place, will remain open at this time, the release stated.
All programming and events at the Airdrie Public Library has been suspended but the facility will remain open for borrowing services only.
Three shows scheduled at Bert Church LIVE Theatre have been cancelled – The Heebee-Jeebees on March 13, Billy McGuigan's Rock Legends on March 22 and The Prairie Mountain Fiddlers on April 4.
Refunds will be issued from point of purchase, according to the City. If tickets were purchase through the box office, contact the theatre at 403-948-8824 ext. 4.
Public access to fire stations and Public Works is closed, as well as to the Town and Country Centre with the exemption of some private events, according to the City's website.
"The overall risk of exposure to people in Alberta (including Airdrie) is considered low at this time," reads the City's website. "We are actively monitoring the situation and continuing to prepare for the potential that the risk in our area will change."
