The Chestermere Regional Recreational Centre will be getting an upgrade thanks to a joint effort by Rocky View County and the Town.

County council approved up to $300,000 in cash-in-lieu funding for the recreation centre, Dec. 21.

Chestermere council approved matching funds, Dec. 20.

“It is yet another cooperative agreement with one of our neighbouring municipalities,” said Rocky View County Reeve Rolly Ashdown.

“We like to support them because Rocky View residents use it as well.”

The money will be used to develop 6,000-square feet above the new arena to include two meeting rooms, program space, washroom upgrades, storage space and electrical, plumbing and ventilation systems.

The viewing area between the two arenas will also be updated to include a kitchen and bar service area and new washrooms. Rental of meeting rooms and the new concession is expected to generate revenue for the Chestermere Regional Community Association (CRCA). The CRCA has further plans to finish upgrading an arena viewing area in 2012-2013 to include new flooring, tables and chairs, roof and electrical upgrades.

The curling rink viewing area will also be completed.

Chestermere Councillor Stu Hutchison said the project is vital to the upkeep of the existing facility, which serves both Rocky View and Chestermere residents.

“We have to move forward and get our facilities up so we can support our growing population,” said Hutchison. “It is to upgrade the facility that is used by all. At the end of the day, it is a big asset for both of the municipalities.”

Dari Lang, Rocky View’s recreation services advisor, agrees.

“It services not only town residents, but county residents as well,” said Lang.

According to Lang, the project will start immediately.

Rocky View County has joint use agreements with several jurisdictions, including Airdrie, Beiseker, Crossfield and Irricana. It also works collaboratively with a number of recreation boards.
