Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie changes name to reflect inclusivity

The Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie has followed suit with fellow Canadian chapters, changing its name to a title that promotes more inclusivity.

The organization will now be called BGC Airdrie, which – according to the charity’s website – has a mission of providing “a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life.”

According to a press release, the name of the charity was changed as a way to fully adhere to the vision and goals of BGC, which are to create a sense of belonging, respect, encouragement and support, cooperation and activism among youth.

“Removing gender from our name modernizes the BGC brand and echoes the inclusive practice we’re known for without straying too far from our history and national brand awareness,” the release stated.

“It also embraces the fact that we serve young people of all ages, backgrounds and identities.”

Airdrie’s BGC chapter has been operating in the community since 1979 and provides affordable programs and services to children and families living in Airdrie and surrounding communities. Activities are developed seasonally and based on age, with some highlights including the club’s Jr. Chef program – where kids learn to cook – and Accelerate, where teens can prepare to take the test for their learners’ license.

The club also offers Merry Festivus, which is held in December to get the whole family in the holiday spirit, as well as a range of summer camps, after-school programs and educational workshops.

“We’re super passionate about the message that has accompanied the name change which is of course, promoting inclusivity for all,” said Sammy Morros, the manager of youth programs at BGC Airdrie.

Kiersten Mohr – president of the Airdrie Pride Society – said BGC and Pride have a long-standing, positive relationship where they work together to provide relevant programming to the community. She said the recent name change is a step in the right direction when it comes to reflecting gender inclusivity among youth.

“Eliminating the gender binary in their name is incredibly positive with respect to ensuring that the organization and the space feel more inclusive to individuals, regardless of gender identity,” she said.

“I love that it opens up the space because what they do is great, and they provide a great resource to our community.”

Morros said the impact of the logo change may be subtle, but it goes a long way in ensuring that everyone who enters the club's doors feels welcome.

“When we have individuals who maybe don’t necessarily identify as a boy or a girl, if they see the old name versus the new name, I think that’s going to kind of inspire something in them and help them feel like they’re accepted and included [at BGC Airdrie],” Morros said.

BGC Airdrie is located next to the Ron Ebbesen Arena, in east Airdrie. For more information on the club, visit bgcairdrie.com
