Deputy Mayor Ray Courtman reported that the recent paving project at the airport has caused an elevation problem for some leaseholders. In some cases, the pavement is higher than individual taxiways into the hangars, giving some planes have very little space between propellers and the ground. Council agreed that if the leaseholders approve, the money that has been budgeted towards a small tractor for the airport could be used to fix this problem. Further discussion will take place before any work commences.
Council has noted a decrease in the number of cat complaints in the village and thanked local bylaw officers Nikki and Sharon King for their diligence. The Kings were present at the meeting and said they would be willing to seek peace officer status to enable the issuance of provincial tickets. The pair is willing to take the courses that would give them accreditation at their own expense, but asked council for sponsorship as the hiring body. Although Beiseker will not be asked to pay for the course, there is still the concern that in the past, peace officers who have gained experience in Beiseker have then accepted full-time jobs in other municipalities. The Kings assured council that at this time they have no plans to move. Council unanimously approved their request for sponsorship in their quest for provincial accreditation.
Mayor Bruce Rowe has expressed interest in starting a ‘Take It or Leave It’ program at the local transfer site. Under the program, people could leave useful items in a container, which could be picked up by others rather than being hauled off to a dump. The logistics of this type of recycle program were discussed and further investigation will take place to see if the idea is feasible.
A number of trees on the North Road will have to be removed due to Bronze Leaf Disease. This work will commence as soon as possible.
Councillor Brenda Hnybida informed council the planning will be complete to enable the Main Street Beautification project to proceed as early as possible in the spring of 2011. The sidewalks will be concrete with a stone pattern similar to that in front of the Village office, and will be a brick colour. The town engineer will be meeting with individual business owners one-on-one to ensure that all concerns regarding access to store fronts and placement of trees are dealt with.
The next general meeting of the Beiseker Chamber of Commerce will include a dinner at Beefsteak Restaurant on Sept. 9. Dinner is at 6 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7 p.m.
Village office received a request from a resident who is in hospital, asking that she be able to vote in this October’s municipal election. Council unanimously approved the request as allowed by the Municipal Government Act. A ballot will be delivered to her by local election officials.
The next meeting of Beiseker council will be Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers. The public is welcome. This will be the last meeting before nomination day for this year’s municipal election.
