The Airdrie Walmart has opted to close for 10 days due to a COVID-19 outbreak among staff, according to Alberta Health Services (AHS) and a posted notice on the business's door.
"Nothing is more important to us than the wellbeing of our team members, our customers and the communities we serve," reads the posted notice. "For this reason, we have temporarily decided to close our business until June 6."
The post went on to say products are still available for online purchase.
The Sierra Springs-based department store has not yet been listed on the Alberta government's list of COVID-19 outbreaks. A statement from AHS said the Airdrie Walmart management chose to close the store voluntarily in accordance with current health guidelines.
"A cluster of COVID-19 cases at the store were linked by AHS public health officials to workplace transmission," the statement read.
A COVID-19 outbreak was also recently declared at the Cochrane Walmart, where more than two-dozen cases were confirmed by Alberta Health in late April. The store remained under outbreak status on May 24, when a spokesperson for Alberta Health reported the store still had two active cases of the virus, in addition to 26 recoveries, as of May 18.
