The Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to a structure fire late Monday afternoon in Highland Park Green, in the northeast quadrant of the city.
Upon arriving at the scene just after 4 p.m, firefighters found a large commercial refuse container on fire. The refuse container was located very near a commercial building which had its outside loading door also damaged in the blaze.
According to a statement released by the fire department, the overhead loading bay door was closed at the time of the incident and likely prevented the fire from spreading into the structure. A fire sprinkler inside the commercial building was also activated by the external smoke and heat.
Four fire apparatus and 12 firefighters responded to the blaze, and these crews quickly extinguished the blaze and turned off water to the building’s sprinkler system to prevent further damage.
AFD reported there were no injuries at the scene, and confirmed the Fire Prevention Bureau was currently investigating to determine the cause of the fire and to provide damage estimates.
